Richard Allen Davis is a murderer convicted in 1996 of first-degree murder, burglary, robbery, kidnapping, and attempting to perform a lewd act. He still awaits his ultimate fate.
On October 1, 1993, Davis abducted 12-year-old Polly Klaas. He later confessed to kidnapping and killing Polly, and then led investigators to the area where he buried her body.
Davis has been on death row in San Quentin since his conviction. However, in 2019, California Governor Gavin Newsom signed an executive order suspending 737 inmates’ execution.
This included Davis. Newsom said via Office of the Governor, "The intentional killing of another person is wrong and [...] I will not oversee the execution of any individual."
Polly Klaas' father, Marc Klass, was outraged about Newsom's decision. In an interview with ABC 7 News, he said the governor was "advocating on behalf of pure evil."
Klaas added that those on death row deserve their fate. He has been waiting to attend Davis’ execution ever since Polly’s murder, and Klaas said he’d bring champagne.
