In 1892, Lizzie Borden was put on trial for the murder of her father and stepmother, and although she maintained her innocence and was acquitted, few believed her. She was ostracized by the townspeople of Fall River, Massachusetts, and when she died alone at age 66, no one was invited to her funeral.
All of Borden’s family members — including her sister, her slain father and stepmother, and her biological mother — are buried in the 100-acre Oak Grove Cemetery in Fall River, Massachusetts. Lizzie's grave is immensely popular and widely visited, with visitors often leaving pennies and flowers on it — but not everyone visits to pay respects.
In April, 2015, the Borden grave was defaced with green and black paint, and the cemetery director, Tony Eaton, noted that this was not the first time this had occurred. In this particular instance, Eaton blamed “The Lizzie Borden Chronicles,” a recent Lifetime miniseries, for the vandalism.
