NBA superstar Kobe Bryant’s sudden death in a bizarre helicopter crash that also claimed the life of his 13-year-old daughter Gianna left the whole world in shock. Bryant left behind a huge fortune of $600 million, which led to some controversies regarding the inheritance that may have permanently ruined some family ties.
Although News Trace confirmed that Kobe’s wife, Vanessa Bryant, and their three surviving daughters received the fortune, Vanessa’s mother, Sofia Urbieta Laine, claimed that she was owed a part of the inheritance, leading to a bitter rift in the family. Vanessa denounced Laine in 2020, stating that she had tried to “extort a financial windfall.”
Laine sued Vanessa for money she felt she was owed for being a “personal assistant and nanny” to Kobe’s family for years. Although Laine would try to “back charge [Bryant] $96 per hour [...] for 18 years for watching her grandchildren,” Vanessa clarified that her mother “only occasionally babysat [her] older girls when they were toddlers.”
It comes as a surprise that Kobe left his youngest daughter, Capri, out of his will, despite being crazy about his daughters. However, the simple explanation is that Kobe didn’t rewrite his will because he didn’t expect to die young, and Vanessa has petitioned the courts to add Capri to it.
